During the pandemic, the use of e-commerce has surged, including online purchases of foods that require heat protection during transportation. In most cases, products are delivered within 24 hours, and traditionally, many of these products are shipped using expanded polystyrene (EPS) boxes and other unsustainable traditional cold chain solutions. Although these boxes are lightweight and provide good thermal protection, they also have disadvantages.

There is a viable alternative to plastic cold chain packaging solutions, especially for products that require 24 hours or even up to 48 hours of thermal protection. Ranpak has developed an environmentally friendly paper cold chain packaging solution: WrapPak Protector. Using thermal pads made of 100% paper instead of petroleum-based products has many environmental benefits:

How does it work? Ranpak provides packaging organizations with compact WrapPak Protector conversion equipment and WrapPak Protector paper liner trays. Ranpak experts will evaluate packaging and thermal protection requirements and recommend the best packaging configuration for each type of product, whether it requires continuous thermal protection in freezing, cold storage or ambient temperature ranges.

How does thermal protection compare to EPS boxes? Ranpak's experts conducted extensive tests to determine how Ranpak WrapPak Protector compares with EPS boxes in terms of thermal protection, which is roughly equivalent to EPS boxes. A study on a 45-liter large box and 4 refrigerated bags (300 grams each) using Western European test profiles (ambient temperature between 14-25°C) has shown that products packaged with WrapPak Protector are at the specified temperature The range maintains good thermal protection within the range of these products. Compared with the EPS box, the cooling time is kept within four hours. In addition, as mentioned earlier, packers benefit from savings in storage and transportation costs and improved sustainability.
