As the weather heats up, it's time to get the running vest on

Some days, the weather dictates that even the most reluctant shoulder-bearers reach for a vest, singlet or even - dare we say - tank. It is an item of running kit that you never thought you really needed until you use one; the freedom of movement that a running vest offers is why they're the item of choice for when it comes to race day, but the vest shouldn't be for one day only, they should be a regular garment for when the sun is out or you want to stay cool.

The trail side of adidas, this vest from Terrex is extremely comfortable, features perforated panels to help heat management and is cut a little looser and longer than a pure racing vest, something that is appreciated when you just want a cooling top to run in.

Some days the weather dictates that even the most reluctant shoulder-barers reach for a vest. Light and quick-drying with Asics’ warm weather-specific ‘actibreeze’ tech, this one has body-mapped fabric to increase ventilation in the areas where you produce most heat, plus enlarged side slits to improve airflow.

The more engineered and higher specced range from dhb, Aeron kit is more performance aligned without breaking the bank and this singlet fits well into that mould. The cut of the vest offers great range of movement, it feels light and the Micro-Fresh tech keeps you feeling fresh, even on hot runs.

For those who like a bargain, Craft have been making great vests for a while now that don't cost the earth. They're extremely lightweight and the cut is relaxed. The material was prone to becoming a bit body hugging when things got veery sweaty, but that was only downside we found.

Nike's AeroSwift range has been around for a while now and continues to offer up so impressive pieces of kit, this vest included. With a slightly deeper neck line and larger arm holes, this vest sits comfortably on shoulders, narrowing down the back to keep weight and heat to a minimum.

Made from Nike's sweat-wicking Dri-FIT material, this is a vest you'll reach for time and time again for sweaty speed workouts. There's mesh panels in key areas to keep you cool and, thanks to the relaxed fit and wonderfully lightweight fabric, you can barely notice you're wearing it.

This flattering tank, from Luluelmon's brand new SenseKnit Running Collection, is cut above the waist, so looks stunning paired with high-waisted leggings or cycling-style shorts. The lightweight fabric is super soft and is designed to give a next-to-nothing feeling. It's also highly breathable, sweat-wicking and quick-drying. At £58, it's one of the more expensive vests we've tried but is also one of the more stylish!

Another one for tough track sessions in the summer sun, this vest is made from a fabric called Iso-Chill, which helps disperse heat from the body, and so keeps your skin nice and cool. The fabric is sweat-wicking so will keep you dry and includes anti-odor technology, which prevents the growth of odor-causing microbes. It's cut out at the back allowing for a welcome breeze as you wizz round the track.

Our deputy digital editor Jenny Bozon has been running in an earlier iteration of this vest for years now – and it's still in great condition. It's made from recycled polyester, which is soft to touch, and doesn't fade, bobble or lose shape after multiple washes. The material is a little thicker than some of the other vests feature on this list, so isn't quite as airy but its softness – coupled with the relaxed fit – keeps us reaching for it, time and time again.

We adore the summery tropic print of this ultra-light vest from Kalenji. The cut is designed for free shoulder movement, so you won't feel restricted as you push the pace, and the breathable fabric wicks away sweat and dries quickly. At just 50g (in a size medium), it's as light as a feather, and at less than 20 quid, is also a bargain!

Made with 100% recycled materials, this breezy tank scores top marks for sustainability. The large arm holes, coupled with the loose fit, ensure maximum breathability while the soft, moisture-wicking fabric feels comfortable against your skin and helps keen you dry. It's available in a range of colours, but we love this vibrant lime shade for summer.
